Daniel Malan, assistant professor of business ethics at Trinity Business School and co-chair of the B20 Indonesia Task Force, contributed to the B20/G20 discussion on integrity and compliance:
"Ultimately, it is the role of government to provide a regulatory framework that is conducive to sustainability, but the private sector has a very important role to play. It is important to make a distinction between sustainable practices and sustainable governance practices. Governance practices must be addressed, first and foremost, at the board level. It requires the board to give appropriate direction and to exercise prudent control. To be able to do this, the board should invest in its own sustainability skills." "If a commitment to sustainability is not based on a strong foundation of integrity (and of course compliance) it is likely to end in failure," said Professor Malan.
