The students engaged in a range of lectures and demonstration classes in the mornings and were given time to pursue their own independent research project in the afternoon. The students were encouraged to research in a specific area with the help of the TCD undergraduate student mentors. Twelve research groups with ~4 members per group produced research posters on topics ranging from Nanomaterials to Supernovae. We were very impressed with the standard of posters produced and we hope the students got an idea of what academic research involves.
At the end of the week a poster session was held which was attended by member of staff and the undergraduate and postgraduate community. The posters were judged by an academic panel and 4 prizes were awarded; winner and runner up for content, and winner and runner up for design.
The 2019 prize for best content went to Structural Colour, by Siobhan McGuinness and Aisling McCabe from Muckross Park College, Dublin, Cara Flannagan Walsh and Eulette Trisha Cabansay from Our Lady of Mercy College, Beaumont, Dublin.
The 2019 prize for best design went to A study in Supernovae, by Erika Carter and Dennis Kelly from St. Pauls Galway. OisÃn Duggan from Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne, Galway.
Runners up in the best design category were: 2D materials by Luke Burke, Conor Sexton from St. Francis College, Cork, and Caoilfhionn Little and Hana Ueno from St.Louis Community School, Mayo.
