The Columbia University economist and United Nations advisor, Dr Jeffrey Sachs was among five recipients who received honorary degrees from Trinity College on July 7 last. Dr Sachs, who is director of the Earth Institute at Columbia as well as director of the UN Millennium Project and special advisor to the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan on the Millennium Development Goals, was conferred with a Doctor in Laws (LL.D) in recognition of his significant role in the eradication of world poverty. The former Professor of Business Management at the London Business School, Charles Handy as well as prolific author and broadcaster on management issues and organisational behaviour also received an honorary degree (LL.D).
The other recipients of the honorary degrees were:
Maureen Harding Clark LL.D (Doctor in Laws), a leading Irish jurist who has achieved international prominence in her capacity as a judge of the International Criminal Court. Judge Harding Clark also recently chaired the inquiry into obstetrics at the maternity unit of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.
Paul Haran LL.D (Doctor in Laws) an outstanding Irish public servant, he was Secretary General of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment and key advocate of the formation of the Science Foundation Ireland. He has been a tireless champion of the view that Ireland must become a knowledge economy.
Gunnar Fant Sc.D (Doctor in Science) Professor Emeritus in the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm, he is a world leading scholar in speech communication and the acoustics of the human voice. His pioneering work established the fundamental properties of speech generation.
