Trinity College Dublin and the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s top university, signed a strategic partnership recently which will see both institutions cooperate on teaching and research and facilitate mobility of staff and students between the two institutions. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) formed part of Enterprise Ireland’s trade mission to Brazil led by the Minister for Trade and Development Joe Costello which coincided with the visit of President of Ireland Michael D Higgins to Latin America.
Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, Vice Provost for Global Relations at Trinity College Dublin and Rector Joao Grandino Rodas of University of Sao Paulo sign MOU during recent visit to Brazil.
Speaking at the signing of the MOU, Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, Vice Provost for Global Relations at Trinity College Dublin said: “This is a historic moment for Trinity’s relationship with Brazil. It cements our long-standing research collaborations with the University of Sao Paulo, especially in the area of Irish studies. Under the auspices of this Memorandum of Understanding we hope to see the continuation of research and educational collaborations across all disciplines. We look forward to increased mobility of Brazilian staff and students to Dublin and of Irish researchers and students to Sao Paulo.”
In addition to the MOU, a bilateral agreement to co-operate in education and research was signed between the governments of Brazil and Ireland. It is expected the agreement will see an increase in the number of Brazilian students coming to Ireland for undergraduate and graduate studies as well as increasing the number of research collaborations between Irish and Brazilian educational institutions.
Trinity College Dublin is also taking part in the Science Without Borders scheme run by the Brazilian government. The programme provides funding for students in mostly STEM fields for research at a foreign university. Trinity is one of Europe’s top research universities and offers doctoral training in many aspects of science, including physics, nanosciences, engineering, computer science, natural sciences, chemistry, biomedical sciences and mathematics. The university welcomes enquires from prospective PhD students from Brazil to participate in the scheme.
