Prof Igor Shvets, School of Physics and Centre for Research on Adaptive Nanostructures and Nanodevices (CRANN), was recently granted a prestigious Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Principal Investigator (PI) award. The five year award, to begin in June 2007, is one of the largest PI awards to be granted in Ireland over the past number of years and totals a value of over €4 M. It comes on the back of Prof Shvets’ previous highly successful SFI PI award, which is due for completion in May 2007.
Prof Shvets leads one of the School of Physics’ most active research groups (~ 20 researchers) and is one of the founding members of CRANN. The award will facilitate Prof Shvets’ fundamental investigation of planar arrays of conducting, semiconducting and magnetic nanowires for next generation electronic and magnetic recording devices. One of the main technical advisors for the project is Dr Ted Kamins, a Principal Scientist at Hewlett-Packard’s leading research laboratory, the Hewlett-Packard Laboratories Quantum Science Research Group in Palo Alto, California. The project has also received provisional support from Intel and Seagate. It is hoped that the project will have a positive impact on not only Trinity College Dublin but Ireland as a whole.
