A €9 million purpose built, state of the art facility at St. James’s Hospital for Trinity College Dublin’s Schools of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Radiation Therapy was officially opened by Mr. Ivor Callely, TD, Minister for Services for Older People today. The new facilities provide a unique opportunity for integrated education and research between all disciplines in the Faculty of Health Sciences in addition to helping students understand the importance of integrated patient care from the full range of medical/health science professionals. Speaking today, Professor Shanley, Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, TCD, welcomed the Department of Health’s acceptance of the need to provide support for the clinical placement of students in all health care disciplines in community, hospital and clinical settings. “These are essential for students gaining invaluable hands-on experience in the application of appropriate patient-centred evidence-based care,” he said. The new accommodation includes 3,500 sq.m. of specialised laboratories, seminar and lecture rooms and departmental accommodation. The relocation of Trinity’s Schools of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Radiation Therapy to this facility at St. James’s is part of a larger project that includes the School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies, the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, the John Durkan Leukaemia Laboratories and the Dublin Molecular Medicine Centre.
