The Minister for Education and Skills, Minister Jan O’Sullivan launched Trinity College Dublin’s new Bachelor in Business Studies undergraduate degree on the occasion of an Irish Government mission to China in Beijing  last week. A new International Foundation Programme that will enable Chinese students gain entry to a range  of undergraduate degrees was also announced on the occasion of the visit.

A large delegation of Irish Higher Education Institutions attended the fairs in Beijing, Chengdu and Shanghai over the past week as part of the overall Education in Ireland mission to China, organised by Enterprise Ireland and led by the  Education Minister.

Minister O’Sullivan who officially launched the Trinity Specialist Business degree during the China CEE Education fairs in Beijing said: “It is important to acknowledge Trinity’s strategic engagement in China. This new Bachelor in Business Studies as well as the International Foundation Programme   are important developments in promoting partnerships with China. They highlight Trinity's ongoing commitment to Chinese collaborations, as well as fostering a deep engagement with China which is vital for our students.Trinity as a world class educational institution continues to attract students of the highest calibre.”

The Trinity Business School plays a key role in the development of business leaders all over the world in areas such as technology, finance, politics and management consulting.  It places an emphasis on blended learning where academic excellence meets industry experience.

Coinciding with  the announcement, Trinity College Dublin,  launched its new International Foundation Programme, a one- year pre-university programme designed to help  international students  develop  skills required to succeed and excel in a competitive university environment. The programme is scheduled to start in September 2016 and will be delivered at the campus of Trinity’s associated college, Marino Institute of Education. Students who successfully complete the programme will enter their chosen degree, including the Trinity Specialist Business Studies degree, the following year.  The International Foundation Programme also provides pathways for admission into undergraduate degree programmes including Computer Science, Social Science, Engineering, and General Science.

Entry to Trinity’s undergraduate programmes is highly competitive. The International Foundation Programme provides a pathway for international students who have the ambition to attend a world-class educational institute, but cannot begin an international undergraduate degree directly with their existing qualifications.

Trinity College Dublin’s Links with China

Trinity College Dublin has a longstanding relationship with China which dates to the Mission to the Far East and the establishment of Trinity College Fuzhou. The Dublin University Far Eastern Mission (founded in 1886) established Trinity College Fuzhou in 1907, now the Fuzhou Foreign Language School. Later, Trinity was one of the first universities in the European Union to welcome Chinese students to its campus, with students from Beijing and Nanjing studying in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Today, engagement with China forms a core part of the university's international strategy, and fourteen partnerships have been formed with key Chinese HEIs in the last number of years, and a Trinity Office in Shanghai has been opened. Numbers of Chinese students coming to Trinity continue to increase, and are encouraged by a diverse and rewarding student experience, which includes the support of a vibrant Chinese Society. Additionally, Trinity academics across a number of disciplines are engaged in academic collaborations with their Chinese counterparts to meet some of the major global challenges of the coming years in terms of healthcare, sustainable provision of food and water, urban planning and technology. Trinity has further solidified its commitment to China via the announcement of a new Chinese scholarship and a Trinity Chinese website and social media.
