Dermatology

The discipline of dermatology is spread over two sites, St James’s Hospital and Tallaght University Hospital. We see patients with a wide range of skin diseases.

Dermatology word

We have a special interest in skin cancer and dermatologic surgery. There is close alliance with our colleagues in Plastic & Reconstructive surgery and dermatopathology who meet to discuss the pathway of care for each patient with skin cancer at a multidisciplinary team meeting. Mohs Micrographic surgery is performed on some difficult skin cancers to ensure less chance of recurrence. We have a large cohort of patients with psoriasis who receive phototherapy and various systemic agents. The department is the national centre for the care of adult patients with epidermolysis bullosa. A considerable amount of our service takes place at an outpatient level but we also see many inpatients on our consultation service who have a diverse array of cutaneous diseases often related to underlying systemic disorders or medications received.

Students who are attached to our department are encouraged to participate in all the clinical activities that take place. There are informal teaching events such as the journal club and “joint consults” that takes place in one of the south Dublin dermatology departments each Wednesday morning. Students can observe how ultraviolet light therapy is given by our expert nursing staff to patients with psoriasis.

Tallaght University Hospital provides both an adult and paediatric dermatology service thus facilitating the management of patients with skin conditions from childhood to old age. The service facilitates the seamless transitioning from childhood to adult services under one roof without the need to transfer to another institution for follow on care.

Outpatient clinics are run by consultant dermatologists who can refer patients to dermatology clinical nurse specialists for treatments in their nurse-led clinics. The department provides a very busy day care service for patents with inflammatory skin conditions as well as facilitating skin biopsies and minor surgical procedures.
The dermatology department treats a wide range of skin diseases and these conditions can be broken down into a number of sub-specialities including

  • Phototherapy,
  • Allergic contact dermatitis & Patch testing
  • Cutaneous surgery
  • Paediatric dermatology
  • Skin surveillance in immuno-suppression
  • Pigmented lesion surveillance
  • Melanoma and non -melanoma skin cancer diagnosis and treatment

All the various sub specialities work closely together to provide a high quality service to patients with chronic inflammatory skin disease and skin cancer.
