Biography

Kieran is a CORU registered Occupational Therapist and is a member of the Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland and the World Federation of Occupational Therapists. Kieran holds a BSc in Occupational Therapy from Trinity College Dublin and is currently in the final year of his Ph.D. Research into the development and efficacy of an occupation-focused approach to working with students called the Unlink Self-Management Programme. Kieran has completed the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) supported employment course, as well as Level 1 and Level 2 Modules on the Sensory Integration Pathway. Kieran works in a highly collaboratively and individualised manner with undergraduate and postgraduate students using an occupation-focused approach based upon the Person-Environment Occupation Model (Law et al., 1996). He has almost 15 years experience of working with college students from pre-entry through to the transition to the workplace. Although he engages with students with a wide variety of occupational needs, Kieran has worked primarily with students experiencing mental health difficulties, as well as students who apply for reasonable accommodation with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Developmental Coordination. To make the process easier for students, Kieran also completes the needs assessment and reasonable accommodation process with the majority of the students that he meets.

Kieran also supervises the other Occupational Therapists in the Disability Service on a day-to-day basis, under the Clinical Director of the Occupational Therapy Service, Dr. Clodagh Nolan in the Discipline of Occupational Therapy in Trinity. Since joining the service, Kieran has led a number of initiatives including the development of the Unlink Self-Management Programme, the Career Pathways Project, and the development of low distraction examination venues. Kieran also led the introduction of the Occupational Therapy Service at Technical University Dublin.

Kieran's research interests focus on student mental health, the student transition to the workplace, and the use of self-management approaches in mental health. Prior to coming to work full-time in Trinity in 2009, Kieran played professional rugby with Leinster and Munster and worked part-time within the Occupational Therapy service here over this period.
