Since 2010, our research has explored the potential for energy recovery using low-cost hydropower turbines, specifically the use of pumps-as-turbines (PATs).
These PATS can be installed in water infrastructure to recover energy that would otherwise be lost as excess pressure and released at pressure reducing valves, preventing leakages and pipe bursts. The opportunities for this technology is evident in water networks across the world, and our current projects are identifying sites to install and demonstrate the feasibility of this technology to support a more sustainable water sector.
