Civil Engineering at Trinity College Dublin
Civil Engineering has been taught in TCD since 1842 but in later years as part of a broad based engineering science degree (the BAI). The present degree structure was introduced in 1979 at a time of major curriculum overhaul and expanding student numbers. This engineering educational model is unique to Trinity College Dublin.
The first year serves to consolidate the study of mathematical and physical sciences, as you are introduced to the various facets of engineering through course and laboratory work. In the second year, the subjects basic to all engineering disciplines are studied and, at the end of the year, you select the broad branch of engineering in which you wish to specialise.
From third year onwards, you are now part of the Department of Civil, Structural & Environmental Engineering. During your two or three years as a Civil Engineering Undergraduate we unsure you are exposed to real world engineering both Nationally and Internationally through a range of course activities and programmes.
As such, we encourage our students to participate in our JS (3rd year) Field Trips, we arrange Industrial Placement for our SS (4th year) students, we facilitate ERASMUS programme students (both incoming and outgoing), and we provide a broad range of topics for final year Dissertation Projects, for BAI or MAI students. Details of modules undertaken in third, fourth and fifth years are available on the School of Engineering pages.
The following two (BAI) or three (MAI) years of study can focus on Civil Engineering subjects that link to our Research Pillars of Energy, Environment, Geotechnics, Structures & Transport. For detailed information on Undergraduate courses see the School of Engineering.
