Asst Prof. John GallagherTrinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin
Dr Gallagher is Assistant Professor in Environmental Systems Modelling in the School of Engineering in Trinity College Dublin. He is the Course Director for the Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Monitoring, Assessment and Engineering. Since 2008, he has been working in the area of air pollution, as is a PI in the Air Pollution Research Group in Trinity, adopting the 3M model (measurement, modelling and mitigation) in his research, ranging from monitoring campaigns to specialist computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling of air flow and pollutant dispersion interactions in the built environment. This work informs novel ventilation and mitigation solutions to reduce air pollution exposure of urban inhabitants. His other area of expertise in environmental modelling is applying life cycle assessment (LCA) to explore opportunities for environmental improvements across different sectors (energy, water, construction, etc) to provide a balanced approach to key 21st century challenges of climate change, sustainable development goals and the circular economy.
Adjunct Asst. Prof Paul JohnstonTrinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin
Paul is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Civil, Structural & Environmental Engineering. He is a hydrological engineer who joined Trinity from Imperial College London and was central to the creation of the current Environmental Engineering Diploma, to which he acted as Director until 2019. His expertise spans across all forms of groundwater flows in different soil and rock environments, water and wastewater treatment systems, and environmental impacts of modern engineering infrastructure on the natural environment. He is a recognised international hydrology expert through his work across Europe, Asia and Africa. At a national level, he has acted as an independent expert for a range of engineering projects, providing guidance on flooding, wastewater treatment, and construction impacts on hydrological processes.
Prof Laurence GillTrinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin
Dr Gill is a Professor in Environmental Engineering in the School of Engineering, Trinity College Dublin. His research interests involve studying the fate and transport of both air and water-borne pollutants in the natural and built environment, as well as the development of passive treatment processes. Much of the work involves extensive field studies which are then used to develop mathematical models to gain further insight into the processes. He has published over 300 scientific publications and contributed to National and International project, generating report and guidance for environmental protection through the adoption of engineering solutions for water and wastewater treatment. Prior to joining at Trinity College in 1999, he spent several years working in the UK water industry on the design of water and wastewater treatment processes for urban populations.
David BallHydrogeological Consultant
David is a hydrogeologist who qualified in Dublin and London Universities. He is an applied scientist with experience overseas and in Ireland. His main area of work is on groundwater resources and the practical aspects of exploration and development of new water supplies. He is a member of the Register of Engineers for Disaster Relief and Hydrogeologists without Borders (Groundwater Relief). He is a former president of the IAH Irish Group. He is the main author and illustrator of the 2007 IGI Water Well Guidelines, and the EPA’s Public Water Supply Borehole Construction Guidelines (EPA Drinking Water Advice Note 14, 2013). He was an elected member of the Royal Irish Academy Geosciences and Climate Change Sciences committees for 17 years, and for six years a ministerial appointee to the EPA Advisory Committee. He is currently working on seven water supply drilling and pumping test projects. He is a member of the Technical Advisory Committee of iCRAG, a consultant to the board of An Bord Pleanála and with others has conducted public hearings.
Dr Fergal CallaghanEHS Director, AWN Consulting
Dr Callaghan is Director with responsibility for Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) with AWN Consulting, with a focus on Seveso industries, Process Safety and Environmental Modeling. He believes strongly in adding value to his clients businesses by developing innovative cost effective solutions to emissions abatement challenges, by negotiating with Regulators on behalf of his clients, and by reducing the costs of environmental compliance through maximising the permitted emissions from industrial sites while minimising emission treatment costs. He has a BSc in Industrial Chemistry and a PhD in Chemical Engineering. He is a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC), a member of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), an Associate Member of The Institution of Chemical Engineers (AMIChemE), a Member of the Environmental Protection and Water Subject Groups at the IChemE. He has 22 years engineering and consultancy experience in the Irish, UK, US, Middle Eastern and European markets.
Malcolm DoakSiLC Specialist in Land Condition
Malcolm is a registered land condition expert [SiLC] and previously was a practitioner in risk management/decision making/regulatory leadership for brownfield redevelopment across the EU. He holds significant experience of managing and specifying site investigations to quantify historical releases of hazardous chemicals into water/soil, and ultimately to determine the environmental damage to the receiving environment, and cleanup required. Malcolm has previously held positions based on his extensive expertise within Irish Water, Environmental Protection Agency, Environment Agency (UK) and the Office of Public Works. Malcolm's course contributions follow key topics of Asset Management, Environmental Management and Risk Management, as well as formal ISO standards: ISO 55001, 14001, 31000. He is currently a Professional Member of The Institute of Geologists of Ireland (IGI).
Dr Aoife DonnellyLecturer, Technical University of Dublin (TU Dublin)
Dr. Donnelly is a lecturer in Environmental Health the School of Food Science and Environmental Health at TU Dublin. She is a leading expert in air quality modelling in Ireland, having received her PhD in the field from Trinity College Dublin. Her research interests include the development of innovate techniques in spatio-temporal statistical and deterministic modelling of environmental processes (local to regional scale), population nature relatedness, urban planning and policy design for interventions to improve environmental quality and population health, and benefits from blue and green exercise. She has participated in a range of Irish and EU research projects and is the Irish representative on the CEN TC 264 working group charged with developing new EU modelling standards.
Michele HallahanSustainability Consultant & Sustainability Advisor to the Office of the Provost at Trinity College Dublin
Michele has worked as an environmental auditor since 2000, auditing to various standards including ISO 14001: Environmental Management Systems. She spent several years working in the U.S. as an environmental consultant with an international consulting firm, ERM, working with oil industry, chemical industry, and others, undertaking tasks like writing a waste management plan for a billion dollar oil field equipment supply firm in Houston. She has also worked for the University of Texas (environmental Manager) and the City of Austin (Sustainability Manager) delivering educational and practical initiatives on recycling and waste. In Ireland, Michele has worked with VOICE Ireland as a Recycling Ambassadors, training people in businesses and groups around Dublin on how to recycle properly. She is the Sustainability Advisor to the Office of the Provost at Trinity College Dublin.

Dr Patrick MorrisseyScientific Officer, Environmental Protection Agency
Patrick is Scientific Officer and a Catchment Modelling Expert in the Environmental Protection Agency, having previously worked in the field of groundwater flooding as a post-doctoral researcher in Trinity College Dublin, and in collaboration with Geological Survey Ireland. He attained a PhD from Trinity in 2013 specialising in groundwater and contaminant transfer. He has previous worked in consultancy as a civil engineer on a range of engineering design projects, as well as a hydrogeologist/hydrologist with a specialist focus on assessments and design for large infrastructural projects.
Colm MunnellyMembership Manager at REPAK
Colm joined Repak Ltd in 2007 as a Packaging Technologist and now has overall responsibility for the Membership management team. Colm holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Trinity College Dublin, an MSc in Packaging Technology from Loughborough University and is a Chartered Scientist and Environmentalist through the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. Colm has extensive experience in production related industries, particularly in the Packaging Technology sector with previous roles including Quality Technologist with Danone and Packaging Technology Manager with the Jacob Fruitfield Food Group. In this role he managed all aspects of packaging from initial design though use, recovery and disposal. At Repak, Colm and his team provide advice on packaging design, packaging waste management, packaging statistical management and a schedule of training services to Members. Colm also manages the Packaging Waste Prevention programme, which provides advice to member companies on packaging optimisation and reduction initiatives.
Anja MurrayIndependent Ecologist
Anja is an independent ecologist with a background in environmental science and plant ecology. She works in environmental policy analysis and communications – including nature conservation policy, water policy and climate and has been involved in a wide range of Irish environmental issues such as nature conservation, forestry, European and national agricultural policy; peatland conservation, water quality, natural flood management and other areas where improvements are needed in how we manage our natural environment. Since 2014 Anja has been an expert presenter on the popular national television programme ‘Eco Eye’ on RTÉ1 and also has her own small weekly radio series, called ‘Nature File’, on the national broadcaster Lyric FM.
Elizabeth NagelFlannery Nagel consultancy
Elisabeth is a certified ISO 14001 auditor and has qualifications in Environmental Health (BSc), Environmental Engineering (HDip) and Environmental Acoustics (HDip). She started her career with Dublin City Council, as Noise Control and Air Pollution officer, before joining the EPA as Licence Inspector for six years. Subsequently she worked as Technical Manager in Consulting for 10 years, before establishing Flannery Nagel Environmental Ltd in 2012. Elisabeth has specialised in environmental noise impact assessments. In 2000 she was part of a DGXI EU-policy working group for the Environmental Noise Directive, and has been on steering committees of EPA noise research projects. She has directed numerous environmental noise impact assessments, has provided technical expert witness on environmental acoustics, and lectures on the Trinity Environmental Engineering Diploma on this subject since 2001.
Dr Julie-Ann NaughtonLecturer, Technical University of Dublin (TU Dublin)
Dr. Naughton completed a PhD in 2007 carried out in TCD and Liverpool School of tropical Medicine, investigating the potential of specific novel antimalarial agents. She then moved to UCD/Crumlin Childrens research centre as part of an SFI funded glycobiology research cluster. She has had a long-standing collaboration with the Civil Engineering Dept., TCD investigating the prevalence and importance of microbes in water and has expanded this research recently to encompass antibiotic resistance in environmental microbes. Currently she is a Lecturer in Microbiology and Biotechnology in the School of Biological and Health Sciences and the chair of the Irish Research Staff Association in which role she was involved in the formation of an international researcher network, IcoRSA.
Dr Ted NealonManaging Director at Nealon Environmental Services Ltd
Ted Nealon is a geologist with a Ph.D. in sedimentology. He has over thirty years’ experience in environmental science having started his career in the UK working in a local authority, waste company and environmental consultancy. In Ireland, he worked with ESB International, the Department of Environment and the EPA where he had responsibility for the establishment of the national waste licensing system. Since 2002 he has operated as an independent consultant as Nealon Environmental Services Ltd and recently works mainly as an expert witness in the Irish courts. He has extensive experience in Environmental Impact Assessment; as an assessor with the various authorities, he has worked with, in producing protocols and procedures for such assessments, as part of consultancy teams and as Project Manager for the production of EIA Reports and as an expert witness on all aspects of the EIAR process.
Dr Micheál O’DwyerAAMP Air Quality Lead, Environmental Protection Agency
Dr. O’Dwyer is the Team Lead of the National Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Programme (AAMP) responsible for the Implementation, Data & Reporting in the Air Quality Unit of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). His work focuses on the implementation of all aspects of the National and International air quality guidelines and legislation: CAFE Directive, 4th Daughter Directives and Irish air quality legislation. Micheál has worked for the EPA since 2007 and has significant experience in the area of air pollution monitoring, assessment and enforcement. He is from Midleton, Cork and has a B.Sc. in Chemistry and a PhD in Atmospheric Chemistry, both from University College Cork.
Dr Shane ReganEco-hydrologist, National Parks and Wildlife Service
Shane is ecohydrologist in the National Parks and Wildlife Service and supervises projects related to the research and conservation management of natural ecosystems and advises government on decisions to be made in policy-making. Prior to his role in NPWS, Shane spent over 5 years as a post-doctoral researcher in Environmental Engineering in Trinity College Dublin, 1 year in Quebec Canada, and has an MSc and PhD in environmental engineering.

Michael SweeneyDirector, GQA Environmental
Michael is Director of GQA Environmental, specialists in contaminated land services, and he has worked in this industry for over 10 years in a number of roles including manufacturing, site assessment and characterisation, design of protection systems and on-site verification. He has in-depth knowledge of best practice Irish and UK guidance and regulations. Michael has been involved in reviews of technical guidance in Ireland, as a committee member and contributing to the following best practice CIRIA document: C716:2012 (Contaminated land remediation and mitigation of VOC vapours); and C735:2014 (testing and verification of building protection from hazardous ground gases). Michael has carried out bespoke training for local authority CIEH contaminated land officers and building control departments in N. Ireland and carried out consultation and advisory work for the EPA and DOE.
